The 2022 Political Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences Arising from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas is a crucial tool for strengthening the protection of civilians from the use of EWIPA. It is paramount that all States and relevant stakeholders commit to promoting its universalisation and effective implementation, as well as its principles and norms.
During the Protection of Civilians week, this event will seek to highlight the widespread harm and address the direct and reverberating effects of EWIPA on civilians, including children. Speakers will identify ways in which endorsing and implementing the Political Declaration is vital for strengthening the protection of civilians, and compliance with International Humanitarian Law, and highlighting concrete actions that States can take in preparation for the EWIPA San Jose Conference 2025. Speakers include:
- Mr Tom Fletcher (video message), Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator
- Ambassador Maritza Chan, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations
- Ambassador Fatima Kyari Mohammed, Permanent Observer of the African Union to the United Nations
- Ambassador Fergal Mythen (Moderator), Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations
