SPEAKERS

Iain Overton – Executive Director, Action on Armed Violence

Jennifer Dathan – Consultant, Explosive Weapons Monitoring Project, AOAV

Jake Tacchi – Consultant Researcher, AOAV

Verity Hubbard – Consultant Researcher, AOAV

Murray Jones – Defence Researcher, AOAV

Laura Boillot – Programme Manager, Article 36; Coordinator, International Network on Explosive Weapons (INEW)

Globally, between 2011 and 2020, AOAV has recorded 357,370 deaths and injuries reported in English-language media, from explosive weapons. Civilians have consistently borne the brunt of this violence, accounting for 73% of the total casualties, and 91% when explosive weapons were used in populated areas.

Our ten year report looks at the worst impacted countries/territories and regions for explosive violence harm, and shows the inordinate level of civilian casualties that occur when explosive weapons are used in populated areas. We examine the different types of explosive weapons used around the world, and the reverberating impacts of these incidents on civilian lives.

More than a quarter of a million civilians have been killed and injured by explosive weapons in the last ten years. The scale of violence and depth of suffering, experienced in overwhelming proportion by civilians, has driven our research and advocacy efforts. As a member of the International Network on Explosive Weapons (INEW), we aim to eliminate the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.

Please join us on Zoom on Tuesday 25th May 2021, 12:30 to 13:30 BST as we present the findings from our latest, cumulative report: A Decade of Explosive Violence Harm.
