Briefing on the Regional Meeting on Protecting Civilians from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas that took place in December 2018, in Santiago, Chile, and the Santiago Communiqué

This briefing of representatives of Latin American and Caribbean permanent missions to the UN in Geneva will provide a brief overview of the direct and indirect humanitarian harm resulting from the use of explosive weapons in populated areas, will look at the UN Secretary-General’s call on states to engage on this issue as well as at the UNSG Protection of Civilians Report. We will also inform states representatives about the recent regional meeting in Santiago and will suggest what actions and next steps that can be taken to address such harm at a political and operational level, from a national and regional perspective.
