On 19 January 2016 states will debate the protection of civilians in armed conflict at the UN Security Council. INEW urges states to use the opportunity given by the debate to endorse the UN Secretary-General’s call on states to refrain from the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects in populated areas, and to support the development of a new international political commitment on this humanitarian problem.
