SIDE EVENT: Strengthening implementation of the Political Declaration on EWIPA

The Political Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences arising from the use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas is the first international recognition of this problem. Endorsed by 87 states, it contains commitments to review and develop military practice and assist affected communities.

During First Committee, a focussed discussion will be convened on the humanitarian consequences of explosive weapon use in populated areas on Wednesday 23 October 2024, Room F at 13.15-14.45 local time.

The use of explosive weapons in populated areas is a leading cause of harm to civilians in armed conflict, with both immediate and long-term effects on civilians. The past 18 months have seen unprecedented levels of harm from explosive weapons, resulting in high levels of civilian deaths and injuries, and hampering access to aid, education, healthcare, and services essential for people’s survival.
