AOAV: Syria – The Explosive Truth

Syria - the explosive truth

Syria – the explosive truth

AOAV has produced a fact sheet and infographics on Syria and explosive weapons. It finds that:

  • 93% of fatalities due to explosive weapons are civilians. This is far higher than the proportion of civilian deaths from other weapon use (71%).
  • 40% of all deaths recorded in Syria have been caused by explosive weapons (21,871).
  • At least 2,330 children have been killed by explosive weapons in Syria.

It also looks at the ratio of civilian casualties to armed actors, showing that the impact on civilians is greater due to the fact that the vast majority of explosive violence takes place in populated areas. In 2012, Syrian civilians made up 95% of the casualties in those incidents when explosive weapons were used in populated areas.
